What are Reciprocating Compressors?

They are also known as Piston Compressors because it has moveable Piston or Positive Displacement Machines. These Positive Machines are responsible for compressing the air or gas volume and then releasing the compressed air or gas from the system to put it to further use. Working of Reciprocating Compressor

Now to instate the Working process, you should understand the four working steps that take place when the compressor starts its air compressing cycle.

1- Inlet Stroke:

In this step, the compressor’s piston moves downward from the head of the compressor which creates a gap in the cylinder. In this vacuum, external air makes its way into the cylinder through the intake valves.

2- Comprehension Stroke:

Now that the air has entered the cylinder, the piston starts to move upwards to the cylinder head again. This reduces the volume of the gas inside the cylinder and compresses it resulting in increased pressure of the gas.

3- Discharge Stroke:

This step comes into play when the discharge pressure in the cylinder outstrips the pressure in the discharge system, it gives rise to the opening of the discharge valves which expels gas from the system and then the gas is collected to put to its intended application.

4- Exhaust Stroke:

When the Gas is safely discharged from the system, the exhaust stroke closes, and the compressor is ready now to take another course of steps from the inlet stroke.

Above mentioned are the basic steps that every reciprocating compressor goes through regardless of its type, even though some additional steps can follow through the whole working procedure depending on the type of reciprocating compressor.

Reciprocating Compressor Lubrication System

Reciprocating compressors need proper and constant lubrication in order to make the compressor run smoothly as these machines have intermixed parts that stay in contact with each other. Constant Lubrication saves your compressor from early wear and tear and ensures longevity. Primarily there are two methods of lubrication.

1- Splash Lubrication:

In Splash Lubrication, the components involved are:
Crankshaft
Connecting Rod
Oil Sump

This lubrication method is usually used in small reciprocating compressors. In this method, the oil sump is the medium in which the crankshaft and connecting rod are indulged. After the immersing, the parts (crankshaft and connecting rod) move which causes the spluttering of sump oil onto the compressor walls and bearing lubricating the compressor.

2- Force Feed Lubrication:

This method of lubrication is adapted by larger industrial compressors. This method uses an oil pump which delivers the controlled amount of oil to critical components. This method ensures a consistent supply of lubricant to the system even at high operating pressures and high speed.

Types of Reciprocating Compressors

There are four types of Reciprocating Compressors.

Single-Acting Reciprocating Compressors:

These compressors are used in domestic applications like refrigerators and other small-scale applications. Consisting of a single compression chamber, these compressors have one side of the piston in contact with the gas.

Double-Acting Reciprocating Compressors:

In this compressor type, there are two pistons available in the compressor which work in a reciprocating manner and keep in contact with gas. This double-piston placement makes the compressor more efficient.
Large industrial applications use these compressors because of their high-pressure compression ability.

Diaphragm Compressors:

This compressor doesn’t have any pistons in place; instead, it contains a diaphragm which is used for gas compression. These are also called membrane compressors. This is used in high-purity applications or to handle hazardous gases.

Rotary Compressors:

These compressors are not purely reciprocating; however, their working principle to compress a gas is similar to Reciprocating Compressors. Rotary screw compressors and rotary vane compressors are examples.

Benefits of Reciprocating Compressors

Easy Maintenance:

They are easily maintained and have a long life compared to other compressor types. Parts of Reciprocating Compressor are cost-effective and unsophisticated which makes the maintenance process easier and cheap. In case of any malfunction, its spare parts can also be easily found as this compressor type is quite common in the market.

Minimal Heat Production:

Compressors produce heat when they work together and cause friction. This heat can have a substantial effect on the overall longevity and sustainability of the compressor. But don’t you worry! Reciprocating Compressors don’t produce too much heat to tire the compressor quickly. Though their heat production is greater than rotary screw compressors, it is still minimal than the centrifugal compressors.

High Pressure:

Their high pressure gives them the edge over other compressors as these compressors have the tendency to discharge double pressure than the rotary screw compressors.
