What is R134a Refrigerant?

R134a is a Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), also goes by the name 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane. Freon 134a was introduced as a replacement for R-12 to minimize the effect of refrigerants on the environment. It has similar thermodynamic properties as R-12 and can be retrofitted in your existing Air conditioning system with fewer modifications; for example, to use R134a in a system, Polyester Oil (POE) must be used in the system. R134a retrofit kits are already available in the market which can ease up the transitioning process for you.

  • Refrain from mixing R134a with any mineral oils or alkyl benzene lubricants.
  • During the transitioning process from R-12 to R134a, both refrigerants should not be mixed.
